This is an Engineering Technician II position in the Graham District Engineer’s Office. Position works independently performing technical work supporting higher level technicians and engineers in administration and execution of District programs. Serves as lead technician for moderately complex highway and structure projects associated with driveway permits and encroachment agreements and subdivision plan approvals issued by the Department. Conducts independent field inspections on various construction operations using plans, contracts, specifications and performs a variety of material inspection for compliance. Performs a variety of complex technical and mathematical calculations. Leads lower level technicians on assigned tasks. Performs a variety of office functions including review of plans, permit submittals, traffic studies, documentation of project activities, recording project records and maintenance of project files via hard copy and computer entry. Work functions may include highway construction surveying and layout. Work may include other related duties and responsibilities as assigned. Ability to establish and maintain positive lines of communication between other technicians, engineers, contractors, and the general public. Ability to apply independent decision making and the use of judgement. Ability to document and take corrective actions and apply safety philosophy and program to all operations. Ability to acquire and maintain various technical certifications necessary to perform the job as required by the Department.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

  • Experience in conducting independent, moderately complex inspections, with limited supervision.

  • Experience in sampling and testing of materials to evaluate acceptance

  • Demonstrated ability to lead co-workers on assigned tasks

  • Skill in evaluating and applying engineering judgment to construction plans, contract provisions, and inspection procedures

  • Experience in maintaining neat, legible, and accurate records and reports, including computer/iPad entry.

Additional Expectations:

Ability to lift 40 to 50 pounds, work in high traffic areas, and work at heights over water or traffic, extreme temperatures, able to traverse uneven terrain, work at night and weekends if necessary. The selected applicant will be expected to legally operate a motor vehicle. Safety toe footwear meeting is required within 30 days of employment. May be required to work nights, weekends, holidays and extended hours as necessary.

Offer of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of NCDOT post offer employment evaluation.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Associates degree in an applicable area of Engineering Technology, Survey Technology or a related curriculum from an appropriately accredited institution and two (2) years of progressive technician level experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
