The North Polk Community School District is a progressive educational community located in the Des Moines metro area just north of Ankeny serving the communities of Alleman, Elkhart, Polk City, and Sheldahl. The District proudly serves over 2200 learners from preschool through 12th grade in five buildings (West Elementary, PK thru 2nd; Big Creek Elementary, 3rd-5th; Central Elementary, PK thru 5th, Middle School, 6th-8th; and High School, 9th-12th).

North Polk Schools, located in Alleman and Polk City is looking for a Nutrition Office Assistant excited to join the team providing meals to our students.

FLSA Status: Exempt X Non-Exempt

Status: Full Time X Part Time

Days: 215 days

FTE: 1.0

Pay Range: $22.87-$23.68Hours: 7:30 am- 3:30 pm

Job Summary:

This role acts as a first point of contact for the Nutrition team. Assists Nutrition Director in reporting, ordering, and maintaining a financially sound nutrition department. Takes a large role in responsibility for department technical support, training/onboarding, staff coverage, and communication. Maintains a good working relationship with the faculty, staff, teachers and students.

Performance Responsibilities:

  • Using industry software, develop and track production records to ensure components are accurately forecasted for production based on historical data and daily student attendance data.

  • Assist in the development of cost-effective menus that meet state and federal guidelines and placing into meal planning software.

  • Coordinates the Child Nutrition Program reporting.

  • Assists in establishing and maintaining accurate accounting procedures and records for proper control and management of money, labor, food, and supplies.

  • Notifies, tracks, processes and approves free and reduced meals and fees for eligible families in accordance with state and federal requirements.

  • Update and maintain Standard Operating Procedures, MSDS, Smart Snack records, training logs, CN Labels and/or PFS, nutrition facts, and allergen information

  • Assist with maintaining RFP documents for bids of food, chemicals, bread and milk.

  • Maintains daily meal participation records. Assists with submitting claims to the Iowa Department of Education.

  • Manages incoming funds and outgoing refunds for nutritions funds, including electronic receipts, and cash receipts. This also includes department donations.

  • Submits purchase orders according to Business Office procedures.

  • Assists with inventory.

  • Assists parents and students with account information, refunds, and transfers as needed.

  • Participates in meetings, in-service training, and workshops for the purpose of conveying and/or gathering information required to perform job functions.

  • Maintains financial security by following established internal accounting control procedures for school meals and vending.

  • Provides other support as requested; organizes and completes short term and long-term projects as assigned.

  • Troubleshooting issues that may arise including software malfunctions and working through proper channels to resolve efficiently, maintaining appropriate party communication throughout.

  • May assist with the Point of Sale (POS) system or other kitchen duties as needed.

  • Update Point of Sale system at the start of the year and as needed throughout.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Specifications/Qualifications:

  • Demonstrates aptitude/competency for assigned responsibilities; ability to understand and follow instructions.

  • Strong organizational and time management skills; ability to work with limited supervision following standardized practices and/or methods with emphasis on accuracy and timeliness.

  • Understands federal and state regulations and guidelines pertinent to food service operations.

  • Attention to detail and ability to maintain a high level of accuracy in food service operations.

  • Strong analytical, problem solving, documentation, and research and resolution skills.

  • Ability to handle confidential information in a discreet and professional manner.

  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.

  • Ability to be an effective team member and display initiative; ability to interact with employees and vendors in a professional manner.

  • High school diploma required.

  • Training with Linq Nutrition Software within 30 days of hire.

  • Proficiency in computer skills and knowledge of applications as necessary to access timely and relevant information and be able to disseminate the same.

Working Conditions:

  • Hazards include kitchen equipment, stairs and communicable diseases;

  • Bending, carrying, climbing, driving, pushing, pulling, reaching, sitting, standing, walking, gripping, and lifting objects weighing up to 45 pounds;

  • Using hands and arms to reach for, grasp, and manipulate objects;

  • Extremes of environmental temperature and humidity;

  • Extreme hot and cold temperatures from equipment.
