What You Will Be Doing:
As the Transportation Manager, you will implement and manage a cost-effective transportation system to move parts between Yancey branch locations, as well as deliver parts from the Caterpillar Parts Distribution Center. You will also develop a route structure to maximize the ability of branches to transfer parts anywhere in the state as quickly as possible to meet customer’s needs, monitor these routes on a continuous basis to make sure they are efficient, meeting time requirements, and cost effective. You will recruit, negotiate rates, and train a team of independent contractors and delivery companies to run the overnight pickup and delivery routes, ensuring that all contractors have backup plans in place and meet Yancey's vendor criteria.
Major Tasks, Responsibilities, and Key Accountabilities:
Implement and manage a cost-effective transportation system to move parts between Yancey branch locations, deliver parts from the Caterpillar Parts Distribution Center, and manage deliveries of parts to customers and remote drop boxes.
Develop a route structure to maximize the ability of branches to transfer parts anywhere in the state as quickly as possible to meet customer’s needs. Monitor these routes on a continuous basis to make sure they are efficient, meeting time requirements, and cost effective.
Recruit, negotiate rates, and train a team of independent contractors and delivery companies to run the overnight pickup and delivery routes. Ensure that all contractors have backup plans in place. Work with existing Yancey procedures to make sure all independent contractors meet Yancey criteria in terms of proper insurance, etc.
Manage damage and claim process between Yancey and vendors to minimize financial loss.
Secure a vendor to implement scanning technology to ensure accuracy and tracking of parts transfers. Train Yancey parts personnel, and drivers to use this system.
Evaluate the advantages and benefits of using an independent contractor management company. Recommend to Yancey the best way to manage that process. If adopted, manage all aspects of the relationship including driver onboarding, background checks, drug screening, driver payments, etc.
Work with the parts people at each location to develop best practices in regard to moving inventory. Ensure that everyone is working together to make sure labeling, packaging and preparing for shipment are done in a way to assist the transportation team minimize errors, damages, and stay safe.
Oversee and ensure that all shipments of Yancey freight is conducted in a safe manner and are compliant with all regulations.
Education/Experience:
The knowledge, skills, and abilities typically acquired through the completion of a high school diploma and/or GED.
Required Qualifications/Skills:
5+ years of experience in the transportation industry
Advanced Computer Skill Set

Willing to work in extreme weather conditions and around loud noises
Physical:
Will require appropriate Personal Protection Equipment to be worn
Able to operate and climb underneath equipment for inspections

Travel:
Typically 30% to 50% of the time.
