Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit Israel & Overseas Senior Associate in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan

The Jewish Federation of Detroit seeks a Senior Associate to work in the Israel & Overseas Department. The Senior Associate’s main responsibility will be the Shinshinim program but will also be responsible for several portfolios as well as miscellaneous other Department responsibilities.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 

Portfolios Will Include:

•    Supervision of the Shinshinim Program

ShinShinim are young emissaries from Israel who defer their IDF service to spend a year volunteering in Jewish communities in the Diaspora. These recent high school graduates live in host homes in our community and volunteer at Jewish institutions such as day schools, congregations and other Jewish organizations. The ShinShinim supervisor is responsible for the management of the daily lives and activities of the 5 Detroit ShinShinim. This role includes, but is not limited to the following responsibilities:  

o    Oversee their well-being and meet with them on a weekly basis, as well as additional times, as needed

o    Responsible for developing and executing a workplan based on the program goals and vision

o    Involved in selection, recruitment and training of Shinshinim as well as travel to Israel for interviews and trainings 1-2 times per year

o    Responsible for securing and liaising with host families

o    Attend Shinshinim Supervisor meetings and conferences

o    Responsible for all logistic aspects of the Shinshinim program (i.e. transportation, phones, credit cards, winter clothing, driving lessons, banking, etc.)

o    Responsible for planning and executing one in-service day per week

o    Responsible for coordinating the schedules of the Shinshinim , including their work placements

o    Responsible for meeting on a regular basis with the Community Partners

o    Responsible for ongoing communication with the Shinshinim’s Israeli families

o    Responsible for working with Finance on budgeting and contracts

o    Available on call for emergency situations

•    Oversight of Planning & Execution of Department Spring Events

o    Oversee the Shinshinim’s involvement in planning the Yom HaAtzmaut and Yom Hazikaron events as well as be part of the lead team for the events themselves with the Community Shlicha

•    Co-Oversight & Execution of Onward Israel Internship Program

o    Every summer, Federation sends 12-35 young adults to Israel on a summer internship program called Onward. Responsibilities include interviewing participants, pre-internship education for both participants and their parents, ongoing communication and problem solving during the internship and post internship debrief and reunion

•    Oversight & Execution of Ride for the Living

o    Plan and execute a bike ride from Ferndale to Detroit and back to raise funds for the Jewish Community Center in Krakow, Poland

Additional Responsibilities may Include:

•    Attend and assist at additional Israel and Overseas events/programs as needed.

•    Attend weekly Department meetings, weekly 1:1 meeting with supervisor and various other meetings

•    Participate in Federation wide fundraising activities

Required Skills and Abilities:  

•    Bachelor’s Degree

•    Background in education, community engagement and/or social work preferred

•    Strong in conflict resolution and decision making

•    Have a positive attitude and be a team player

•    Knowledge of, and appreciation for, the Jewish community, its customs ad practices, Federation, Israel and the Jewish non-profit world

•    Hebrew speaker a bonus

•    Minimum 5 years’ experience in a professional position

•    Love of Israel

•    Confidentiality a must

•    Professional, well-organized, flexible, and detail-oriented 

•    Thrives in a fast-paced environment

•    Strong work ethic and willingness to do what it takes to get the job done

•    Excellent communication, people skills and customer service

•    Adept at multi-tasking and working in a team-oriented environment

•    Must be able to independently manage assigned workload

•    Utilize Asana, Zoom, Dropbox, Cureo, Raiser’s Edge, Sharepoint, Office 360, Google Docs, Google Calendar, Google Drive, Microsoft Excel, Outlook, Teams and Word.
