Academic College Discovery Student Support Specialist

POSITION DETAILS

The College Discovery (CD) Program at Hostos Community College utilizes a personalized approach to providing support services to students who have high potential for success but need assistance with the necessary academic preparation to pursue college level work. The CD Program supports students from admissions through graduation, helping them reach their full potential and achieve academic success.

The College Discovery Department invites applications for an Academic College Discovery Student Support Specialist. The Support Specialist will report directly to the College Discovery Program Director. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Manages an assigned caseload. Provides developmental academic advisement as well as student counseling related to career, personal, and transfer.

  • Provides financial aid information to students and conducts counseling group sessions.

  • Leads/facilitates new student seminars.

  • Assumes related responsibilities within the program division of student development.

  • Serves on departmental and college wide committees; participates in office meetings.

  • Other related duties as needed.

  • Essential duties require in-person presence.

QUALIFICATIONS

A Master's degree in counseling, social work, or psychology and two years' related experience. Other related master's degrees can be considered.

Note: this is not a mental health counselor/practitioner position and is not responsible for providing psychological counseling.

The following qualifications are preferred:

  • LMSW license

  • Experience working in a higher education setting

  • Availability to work evening and weekend hours

Provides educational programs, academic advice, and assistance to College Discovery students. College Discovery is a higher education opportunity program established to provide comprehensive academic support to assist capable students who otherwise might not be able to attend college.

  • Provides advice to students covering academic, social, career, and related issues, making appropriate referrals as needed

  • Determines areas of need and develops and teaches orientation programs, seminars, student workshops, and other activities

  • Develops academic interventions related to student academic status and success

  • Reports on activities and outcomes, assisting with report-writing and data collection

  • Collaborates with academic and student support departments to ensure students are utilizing available services and programming

  • Performs related duties as assigned.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

$64,689 - $68,004; Salary commensurate with education and experience.
