TEKsystems Data Center Technician in Brookfield, Wisconsin

Job Summary:

We are seeking a skilled Data Center Technician to install, test, modify, and terminate fiber, coax, and Cat 5/6 cables within customer data centers and telecommunication zones. This role involves performing server installations, managing drives, switches, routers, ladder racks, cages, and cabinets, and conducting advanced testing and troubleshooting. The ideal candidate will have experience with custom installations, advanced fiber terminations, and leading cage builds.

Responsibilities:

  • Install, test, and modify fiber, coax, and Cat 5/6 cables.

  • Perform server installations, including drives, switches, routers, ladder racks, cages, and cabinets.

  • Conduct advanced testing and troubleshooting of customer equipment and security systems.

  • Install custom ladder racking and manage order commitments.

  • Run fiber and coax cross-connects, ensuring proper termination techniques.

  • Deploy cabinet rack mount PDUs and install cable management systems.

  • Rack and stack customer equipment.

  • Install and test cross-connect circuits (e.g., T1, DS3, OC3-48, Ethernet, GigE, 10Gig).

  • Conduct carrier circuit maintenance and advanced fiber terminations.

  • Work with customers to troubleshoot issues, including basic configuration tasks (e.g., DRAC, iLO).

  • Maintain detailed written records of all work activities.

  • Manage and maintain technicians, daily operations, and project staffing requirements.

  • Escalate service requests that require additional information.

  • Determine work priorities from the ticketing queue and ensure adherence to commit times.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of cable limitations and installation drawings (Visio).

  • General knowledge of safe working practices (e.g., tool safety, eye protection, ladder safety).

  • Basic understanding of Unix and Windows booting processes and commands.

  • Experience troubleshooting circuits with carriers and understanding system command languages (Unix, Windows).

  • Ability to lift heavy equipment and perform essential job functions (e.g., walking, standing, bending, stooping, climbing, lifting).

  • Flexibility to work days, nights, weekends, and holidays as needed.

Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or GED required.

  • 3+ years of related work experience with server builds in a production data center environment.

  • Preferred certifications: Fluke CCTT Copper, Fluke CCTT Fiber, JDSU BERT Testing, Digital Lightwave Testing, BICSI Level II Copper, BICSI Level II Fiber, FOA – CFOT, CompTIA A+, CompTIA Network+.

  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs throughout the day.

  • Strong communication skills and a disciplined approach to managing tasks.

  • Proficiency with basic PC operations, MS Office, and Outlook.

Skills:

  • Data center infrastructure

  • Use of work order ticketing systems (e.g., ServiceNow)

  • Racking, stacking, running cable, decommissioning equipment, following procedures, documenting tickets, terminating fiber and copper

Additional Information:

  • This is a 2nd shift position working from 4 PM to 12 AM, Wednesday to Friday.
