Job Summary
The Department of Industrial and Manufacturing Systems Engineering at the University of Michigan-Dearborn is inviting applications for a Lecturer I for Fall Term 2025 to teach HCED 220: Engineering Design Communication (2 credit hours) The course will be taught in person at the Dearborn campus and meet on Tuesdays at 12:00 pm - 1:45 pm (2265 Social Sciences Building).
This is expected to be a 16.67% appointment.
HCED 220: Engineering Design Communication
This course examines the fundamentals of researching, writing, and presenting technical information for diverse audiences and purposes. Students learn to plan, analyze and prepare for different types of communications; differentiate between audience types and their needs for information; conduct research, understand authority of sources, and provide citations; develop effective listening techniques in business and technical situations. Techniques for writing communication documents, developing and delivering effective presentations and design portfolio, along with the media and technologies commonly used for design communication is also covered in this class.
Required Qualifications*
Candidates will possess, at minimum, a Master's degree in engineering, technical communication, education, or a related field (a Ph.D. is preferred but not required); prior teaching experience in technical writing, engineering communication, or a related discipline; at least 10 years industry experience, including at least 5 year of engineering and client management experience; and the ability to engage students in collaborative and project-based learning. Candidates will be evaluated based on submitted CV, teaching evaluations, and relevant recommendations.
