Job Description

As a Probation/Parole Officer 1 with the Iowa Department of Corrections, you will guide lower-risk individuals on their path to rehabilitation, helping them make positive changes while ensuring public safety. This role is perfect for those who are passionate about mentoring, problem-solving, and fostering change through evidence-based practices.
In this role, you will:
Supervise Lower-Risk Clients – Develop individualized supervision plans, monitor compliance, and use behavioral techniques to support positive change through office visits, home visits, and community outreach.
Prepare Presentence Investigations & Reports – Compile accurate reports for courts and parole boards, analyze case histories, and maintain detailed case files while ensuring confidentiality and compliance.
Facilitate Treatment & Educational Programs – Co-lead cognitive behavioral programs, connect clients with community resources, and track progress to adjust supervision strategies as needed.
Collaborate with Community Partners – Work with courts, law enforcement, and service providers to support client success and educate stakeholders on risk reduction and public safety strategies.
Monitor Compliance & Case Management – Use assessment tools to track client progress, update case plans, and ensure compliance through drug testing and appropriate interventions.
Respond to Crises & Ensure Safety – Address client violations while prioritizing public safety, conduct field visits, and apply de-escalation techniques when necessary.
Commit to Continuous Improvement – Stay current on best practices, participate in professional development, and uphold ethical standards in all aspects of the role.

Minimum Qualification Requirements
Applicants must meet at least one of the following minimum requirements to qualify for positions in this job classification:
Graduation from an accredited college or university with an associate’s degree in any field.
A total of two years of education and/or full-time experience in a human services or criminal justice field, where thirty semester hours of accredited college or university coursework in any field equals one year of full-time experience.
Current, continuous experience in the state executive branch that includes 18 months of full-time work as a Residential Officer.
