Job Description

What we want

The Professional Counselor I is the primary counselor contact for substance abuse and alcohol education training program. Triages clients and recommends/determines what services are required. Point of contact for community agencies dealing with alcohol and other drug (AOD) issues. (BACODA, AA, NA, etc.). Responsible for various programming and special events for the department to align with the Drug Free Schools and Communities Act. Provides AOD education and support for the Maritime Academy Program.

Essential Duties/Tasks:

  • Counseling Students - Addresses individual and group needs related to personal alcohol and substance use.

  • Community Resources Management - Connects with community resources such as BACODA, TDAAP, AA, & NA for students related to alcohol/substance abuse

  • Recordkeeping - Maintains records to assist with compiling biennial Drug Free Schools & Communities Report.

  • Administrative and Other - Administrative tasks and other duties as assigned.

    What you need to know

    Salary: $25.00 hourly

Required Education and Experience

  • Master's degree in Counseling, psychology, or social work with eligibility to be licensed in the State of Texas.

  • Practical/field placement relevant to college counseling, or supervised experience related to job function.

Required Licenses and Certifications

  • Eligible for licensure as a Texas Licensed Professional Counselor-Intern (LPC-Intern), Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT), Licensed Masters Social Worker (LMSW), or Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW).

  • Must maintain licensure for continued employment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Licensed in the State of Texas in counseling, psychology, or social work.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Demonstrated experience working with young adults in a therapeutic and/or educational setting.

  • Knowledge of Clinical competency in multicultural counseling.

  • Ability to manage multiple concurrent responsibilities.

  • Ability to communicate effectively with others.

  • Adherence to the Ethical Principles and Code of Conduct for the relevant Texas State Licensing Board and all relevant laws of the State of Texas.
