Job Description

Under general supervision, the Library Technician organizes, maintains, and delivers library services and provides technical and instructional support to patrons in the use of library resources. This includes serving as the technical vendor contact for online databases and access services, maintaining the e-journal and e-book collections through title list updates and other detailed metadata procedures, collecting database usage statistics, assisting in the maintenance of online tutorials, and assisting students with technology. This role will direct students, faculty, and staff to the academic librarian, when appropriate.

Minimum Qualifications

  • 1 year of relevant experience; an Associate degree in an related field may substitute for 6 months of experience.

  • Working knowledge of library classification system(s) and standard library reference tools sufficient to assist clients in locating materials to support academic learning.

  • Ability to operate personal computers, use various software and web-based applications, and other office equipment to locate catalog information, word processing documents, complete forms, and complete reports.

  • Ability to apply and support detailed coding or cataloging systems sufficient to create tracking for new print and non-print library acquisitions and locate and replace existing materials.

  • Communicate effectively orally and in writing sufficient to determine and respond to the informational needs of clients of varied educational levels and backgrounds; to train, direct and evaluate the work of student clerical staff; and to assist the professional library staff to maintain the library collection according to library policy and procedures.

  • Demonstrated cross-cultural knowledge that facilitates positive working relationships in a diverse campus community.

Preferred Qualification

  • Bachelor’s Degree in related field and/or Library Science-related classwork/courses.

  • 2 year of experience working in a library, preferably with a technical service focus.

  • 2 years of college coursework or a certificate in library information technology.

  • Working knowledge of library-related ILS and software such as ALMA, Primo VE, LibGuides, LibAnswers, or etc.

  • Familiarity with current cataloging standards and resource tools sufficient to make decisions about the cataloging of materials.

  • Familiarity with Library of Congress Classification standards.

  • Excellent customer service skills.

  • Ability to work independently and address issues that arise on own initiative.

  • Ability to address tasks in an organized and systematic way and to prioritize multiple tasks appropriately.

  • Ability to apply a high degree of attention to detail and accuracy to tasks.

  • Days, Monday - Friday.
