Assistant Cook - Heron in
HERON, Montana
- SUMMARY: To assist the Head Cook in preparing nutritious meals as prescribed by USDA Guidelines, following the Basic Menu Plan to insure that 1/3 of daily nutrient requirements are provided with each congregate and/or home delivered meal; to wash and sanitize dishes, glasses, cups and eating utensils (either by hand or machine), to clean out coffee pots, and to assist in cleaning up after each congregate meal.
- HOURS: 2:00pm - 7:00pm Wednesdays
- LOCATION: Heron Community Center
- ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Assists in the preparation of weekly congregate meals utilizing standard cooking techniques (steaming, baking, roasting, etc.)
Assists in keeping food inventory and insuring that the kitchen is stocked as necessary.
Assists in properly storing food, both fresh and left over.
Assists in performing proper cooling procedures, along with checking temperatures and completing required temperature logs.
Assists in insuring that the kitchen area and equipment are kept within Health Department Sanitary guidelines, and that the kitchen passes random Health Department inspections.
Assists in serving congregate meals in a considerate and friendly manner, and shows compassion for the nutritional needs of the elderly and/or disabled.
Washes all pots, pans, cooking utensils, and appliances used to prepare meals, and cleans food prep surfaces after use.
Takes responsibility for preparing meals in the temporary absence of the Head Cook. Takes responsibility for attending Nutrition Planning Committee meeting in the temporary absence of the Head Cook.
Cleans, scrapes, washes and sanitizes all dishes, glasses, cups, eating utensils, and coffee pots used in congregate meal(s), either by hand or machine using appropriate cleaning methods as authorized by County Health Department.
Keeps inventory of dish cleaning and sanitizing supplies, and advises Head Cook when dish washing machine maintenance or supplies are required.
- OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Assists in maintaining a variety of operational records including meal counts, inventories, and preparing tabulations and summaries as requested. Keeps accurate records of time worked and follows SCCOA policies and guidelines.
Provides clients with accurate information regarding Sanders County Council on Aging services and/or directs them to appropriate resources.
Exhibits good work habits including attendance and punctuality.
Presents a neat appearance and competent manner. Demonstrates enthusiasm for his/her work.
Maintains SCCOA and client confidentiality.
Other job-related duties as assigned.
- EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
HS Diploma or GED with two years documented kitchen experience
Successful completion of food safety course as required by the county Health Department
- REQUIRED SKILLS:
Ability to organize and participate in the operation of a commercial kitchen
Ability to assist in the preparation of properly portioned, nutritious meals
Ability to meet meal preparation deadlines/serving times
Ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing
Ability to work independently, and appropriately prioritize assignments
- PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
The Kitchen Assistant must be able to perform the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.
Ability to stand for long periods.
Ability to walk, kneel, crouch, stoop, crawl, twist, climb, push, and pull.
Ability to lift 40 pounds.
Ability to operate stoves, ovens, mixers, and related kitchen equipment correctly and safely.
Work is typically performed in a commercial kitchen and dining room area, and the nature of the work requires exposure to hot kitchen equipment, hot water, chemical cleaning agents, sharp knives and implements, noise, odors, vibration and possible mechanical hazards.

- SUPERVISION/PROBATION/REVIEW:
The Kitchen Assistant will report directly to the Head Cook, but will work closely with Cen er staff and volunteers, Site/Kitchen staff, and Deputy Director.
Initial probationary period is six months, after which a progress review will be conducted
Annual reviews will be conducted thereafter.
