This position will support the Systems Integration and Test Facility (SITF), Systems Integration Laboratory (SIL) Hardware-in-the-Loop facility (HWIL), and the new MARS Ascent Vehicle Systems Integration Lab. These facilities will be used to verify the integrated avionics system and Flight Software for the Space Launch System (SLS) at NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC).

Responsibilities:

The Software Integration Engineer participates in implementing and maintaining laboratory automation software that controls real-time HWIL simulation systems used to support the NASA Space Launch System program at MSFC. This operations team member collects, interprets and documents system requirements; participates in component, subsystem and system concept designs; develops and recommends methods, tools, designs, and automation functions.

  • Perform software systems engineering functions.

  • Develop and execute test plans and procedures.

  • Enter and update documentation into appropriate control systems.

  • Troubleshoot and correct test anomalies.

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure products meet requirements.

  • Produce documentation and user training materials to assist users.

These activities will be ongoing through multiple launch vehicle configurations as the SLS program completes program phases, reviews and schedule milestones.

B.S or M.S degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Electrical Engineering or related field is required. Degree from an ABET accredited university preferred. Typically, educational requirements are the equivalent of a minimum of a Masters with at least 3 years of experience, or BS with at least 5 years of experience.

Required Experience:

  • Proficient in tools/languages such as: Python, Qt, Windows 10, and Linux

  • Exposure to tools/languages/standards such as: XML, C/C++, Git, Bash,Trac, and Linux shell scripting.

Desired Experience:

  • Systems engineering experience in disciplines such as hardware and software integration, requirements development, verification and validation, and testing.

  • Development on Windows and Linux operating systems.

  • Network communications with TCP and UDP.

  • Configuration management of distributed computing platforms used during formal avionics HWIL test activities.

  • Developing user interfaces for automated test control and data display in support of formal avionics HWIL - test activities.

  • The ideal candidate should be proactive, willing to learn, a team player, customer-focused, attentive to details, and always looking for improvements.

Essential Functions

Work Environment:

This position is 100% onsite and in a lab environment. Requires ability to provide clear, concise, accurate and timely communication, both verbally and in writing (100%). Requires ability to interact professionally with co-workers, management, and client (100%). May require limited travel.

Physical Requirements:

Requires sitting for extended periods of time in meetings with peers, management, and with our client at NASA facilities to discuss technical issues (10%). Also, requires sitting for extended periods of time at a desk to write reports and perform engineering tasks (40%). Requires ability to use stairs or elevators for access between floors and multiple buildings at NASA and other facilities (10%).

Equipment and Machines:

Requires ability to operate a personal computer, a telephone, fax machine, copier, calculator, and other general office equipment (100%).

Attendance:

Normal workday 7:30 - 4:30, Monday thru Friday. Shift work is required during 24 hour operations. Minimal overtime may be required (10%) to meet schedule milestones and to support technical demands of the job. Regular attendance is a necessity, and adequate arrangements for delegating duties during absences are required. Flexible scheduling.

Other Essential Functions:

The ability to work independently with minimal supervision, and to make rational decisions, and to exercise good judgment is essential (100%). Grooming and dress must be appropriate for the position and must not impose a safety risk/hazard to the employee or others.
