Position Summary(Basic Job Function)

This is a temporary or an on-call position. Provides technical support. Responsibilities may include computer programming or operations; research support; medical patient care; technical equipment maintenance, repair, fabrication or operation; or other technical support functions.

Unit Position Summary

The Haddad Lab is hiring research technicians to assist with conservation and research activities for two critically endangered butterfly species, the Poweshiek Skipperling and Mitchell’s Satyr. The Haddad Lab and the John Ball Zoo (Grand Rapids, MI) work alongside the Poweshiek Skipperling International Partnership and the Mitchell’s Satyr working group to manage an ex-situ facility for these species. Technicians will be responsible for assisting with Poweshiek Skipperling and Mitchell’s Satyr ex-situ activities at the John Ball Zoo. Activities may include greenhouse work such as captive rearing, breeding, egg collecting, host plant maintenance, data collection, and other husbandry activities. Field work may be involved including assisting with population monitoring and releases of adult butterflies. Technicians will start mid-May and end mid-August, with start and end dates somewhat flexible.

Technicians will be expected to maintain a flexible schedule including very early mornings and/or late evenings as daily activities change throughout the summer. Some weekend work will be required. During field work, technicians must be comfortable working in areas where ticks, mosquitoes, and venomous snakes are present.

Desired Qualifications

Ability to work long hours outdoors in direct sun, high temperatures, and humid conditions while maintaining accurate notes and a positive attitude is necessary. Driver’s license and a clean driving record is required as frequent trips to field sites will occur. Previous field work experience, especially with butterflies, is beneficial. Must have or be working toward a bachelor’s degree in biology, ecology, conservation, or similar.
