Los Alamos National Laboratory ES-WFO Deputy Group Lead (Nuclear Facilities Engineering Manager 3) in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

Engineering Services Division partners with Operations, Maintenance, and Projects to provide facilities and equipment for the Laboratory's science and national security production missions. Engineering Services Division enables work spanning the majority of Laboratory Directorates. Teams within ES Division are multi-disciplinary, collaborative organizations. These teams monitor and troubleshoot equipment, develop, and maintain technical documents, and deliver engineering packages for maintenance and project execution.

Within Engineering Division, Weapons Facilities Operations (ES-WFO) seeks a Nuclear Facilities Engineering Manager 3 for the System Engineering Team Leader position. In this role, you will report to the Engineering Group Leader and be Responsible Line Manager for approximately five to eight engineers. The System Engineering team is responsible for facility system health tracking, development of the planned major maintenance program, trouble shooting of facility equipment, pressure/electrical safety compliance, and maintaining the technical baseline of WFO facilities.

The WFO area of responsibility is over 150 operating facilities. Our portfolio of facilities includes operations related to high explosives, accelerators, detonator production, nuclear, and other research and development.

Team Leader responsibilities include (list is not all-inclusive):

  • Participate in the Group Engineering Management team and interface with other groups in Engineering Services

  • Direct Group Activities as Acting Group Engineering Manager when the Manager is absent

  • Serve as a technical representative and discipline subject matter expert

  • Screen, hire, train, and develop employees

  • Manage employees' assignments and deliver engineering products to meet priorities

  • Develop goals, conduct performance reviews, and initiate performance improvement and personnel actions, if required

Minimum Job Requirements:

This is a management position within Engineering Services Division, ES-WFO. Proficiency and experience in meeting customer requirements while ensuring quality and compliance are integral to success. Accordingly, this position requires:

  • Strong understanding of Integrated Safety Management principles and experience in a mature conduct of engineering environment

  • Ability to develop short and long-range plans, while monitoring and communicating progress to employees and customers

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and an ability to communicate effectively with customers, staff, and management

  • Experience contributing to and leading multi-disciplinary projects in accordance with regulatory and technical requirements. Strong ability to direct, coach, lead and motivate others.

  • Experience in applying International Building Codes (IBC) and International Existing Building Code (IEBC) to facility design and construction projects

  • Knowledge of additional industry Codes and Standards related to safe and effective equipment installation (e.g. - ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel and B31 Codes, ASHRAE, NFPA, NEC, etc.)

Education/Experience: Position requires a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution and 5 years related experience; - or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

A professional license (PE) in an engineering discipline from a recognized licensing board is preferred

Desired Qualifications:

  • Advance degree in engineering, management or business

  • Registered Engineer in Training (EIT) or licensed Professional Engineer (PE).

  • Knowledge of applicable codes and standards in common use at DOE and DOD facilities (ASME, NQA-1, IBC, IEBC, IEEE, NFPA, etc).

  • Knowledge of LANL Engineering Standards and Conduct of Engineering requirements

  • Previous Department of Energy or Department of Defense experience with facility operations, engineering design, project engineering and maintenance engineering

  • Active or Previous Q Clearance or DOD Secret Clearance

Additional Details

Directive 206.2: Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

426.2: This position is subject to DOE Order 426.2, Personnel Selection, Training, and Qualification Requirements for DOE Nuclear Facilities, which establishes entry-level requirements to ensure candidates selected for specific positions can successfully perform the requirements of the job.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.

Internal Applicants: Regular appointment employees who have served the required period of continuous service in their current position are eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Incentive Compensation Program: Position is eligible to participate in the Triad Incentive Compensation Program. You must be in an eligible position for a minimum of 3 months, before July 1st and remain in an eligible position as of the end of the fiscal year, September 30th. The annual distribution is prorated based on the number of months in the eligible position.
