Position Overview:

SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory is one of 17 Department of Energy (DOE) National Laboratories. Operated by Stanford University on behalf of the DOE, SLAC develops and operates some of the world’s premier science facilities, including the first hard X-ray free-electron laser, the Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS). Researchers from SLAC and other premier institutions around the world use our facilities to investigate some of the most exciting and important problems facing our society in areas such as clean energy, environmental science, biomedicine, and advanced materials.

LCLS seeks a Project Scientist with a background in structural biology, structural dynamics, and/or the microfluidic transport of biologically relevant systems to join the LCLS Biological Sciences Department to lead the implementation, development and support of droplet based sample delivery methods as part of the Center for Structural Dynamics in Biology. These droplet systems will be used for X-ray experiments including x-ray crystallography, x-ray spectroscopy, diffraction and solution scattering for biochemistry and condensed phase chemistry applications and will primarily be deployed at the MFX instrument. The candidate is required to have experience in state-of-the-art instrumentation development and an advanced skillset with microfluidics. The successful candidate is also expected to develop a successful self-led scientific research project/portfolio within LCLS that leverages the facilities’ capabilities. You will have the opportunity to collaborate with researchers and at SLAC and Stanford University. The successful candidate should be curious, motivated, and self-driven. The dissemination of scientific and technical outcomes through peer reviewed publications, as well as presentations at meetings/conferences, is expected.

  • Ph.D. in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Physics, Physical Chemistry, Applied Physics, Biophysics or related field.

The expected pay range for this position is $90,000 to $140,000 per annum. SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory/Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for a position. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location, and external market pay for comparable jobs.
