Actalent Substation Designer in New Albany, Ohio

Job Title: Substation DesignerJob Description

Our team is seeking a dedicated Substation Physical Designer for our Power Delivery Substation Department in Columbus, OH. This position offers an in-office and/or hybrid work environment, with the possibility of a fully remote role depending on experience and proven remote working capability.

Responsibilities

  • Work within a team to complete complex and technically challenging aspects of electrical utility substation design while adhering to client standards.

  • Perform the detailed physical design of medium to extra high voltage utility substations.

  • Create one-line diagrams and physical layouts.

  • Select substation equipment.

  • Develop substation general arrangement plans, sections, and elevations.

  • Design control buildings and associated details.

  • Prepare cable and conduit plans and details.

  • Design ground grids and lightning protection systems.

  • Create yard lighting designs and material lists.

  • Perform AC and DC systems calculations and sizing.

  • Collaborate with engineers to develop comprehensive drawing packages.

  • Coordinate designs with other disciplines such as Substation Protection & Control, Structural, and Civil.

  • Participate in quality assurance and quality control programs.

  • Contribute to engineering project scheduling and budget management.

Essential Skills

  • Experience in physical substation design.

  • Proficiency with Inventor, 3D AutoCAD, and MicroStation.

  • Strong understanding of electric utility substation design.

  • Excellent electrical and mechanical reasoning skills.

  • Attention to detail.

  • Proficiency in the Microsoft Office Suite, especially Outlook, Excel, and Word.

  • Strong command of the English language with good written and oral communication skills.

  • Ability to work effectively with internal team members and external clients.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Associate's degree or equivalent technical education.

  • Experience with both 3D AutoCAD and MicroStation is preferred.

  • Previous experience with AEP is a plus.

  • Candidates must be legally authorized to work permanently in the U.S. without the need for work sponsorship.

Work Environment

The role offers a hybrid work environment, with in-office presence preferred from Tuesday to Thursday for local candidates. Fully remote work is available for candidates with at least 5 years of relevant experience. The company provides a competitive salary structure and bonus opportunities.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $33.00 - $45.00/hr.
