Our team is seeking a dedicated Substation Physical Designer for our Power Delivery Substation Department in Columbus, OH. This position offers an in-office and/or hybrid work environment, with the possibility of a fully remote role depending on experience and proven remote working capability.
Responsibilities
Work within a team to complete complex and technically challenging aspects of electrical utility substation design while adhering to client standards.
Perform the detailed physical design of medium to extra high voltage utility substations.
Create one-line diagrams and physical layouts.
Select substation equipment.
Develop substation general arrangement plans, sections, and elevations.
Design control buildings and associated details.
Prepare cable and conduit plans and details.
Design ground grids and lightning protection systems.
Create yard lighting designs and material lists.
Perform AC and DC systems calculations and sizing.
Collaborate with engineers to develop comprehensive drawing packages.
Coordinate designs with other disciplines such as Substation Protection & Control, Structural, and Civil.
Participate in quality assurance and quality control programs.
Contribute to engineering project scheduling and budget management.
Essential Skills
Experience in physical substation design.
Proficiency with Inventor, 3D AutoCAD, and MicroStation.
Strong understanding of electric utility substation design.
Excellent electrical and mechanical reasoning skills.
Attention to detail.
Proficiency in the Microsoft Office Suite, especially Outlook, Excel, and Word.
Strong command of the English language with good written and oral communication skills.
Ability to work effectively with internal team members and external clients.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
Associate's degree or equivalent technical education.
Experience with both 3D AutoCAD and MicroStation is preferred.
Previous experience with AEP is a plus.
Candidates must be legally authorized to work permanently in the U.S. without the need for work sponsorship.
Work Environment
The role offers a hybrid work environment, with in-office presence preferred from Tuesday to Thursday for local candidates. Fully remote work is available for candidates with at least 5 years of relevant experience. The company provides a competitive salary structure and bonus opportunities.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $33.00 - $45.00/hr.
