Overview

A Hazardous Materials Technician, under limited supervision and or using general procedures and or work instructions, performs routine and non-routine assignments within, but not necessarily limited to, the area of environmental safety and health and hazardous waste management of substantial variety and complexity, where operation precedents may not always exist. Technician will receive technical guidance and direction from supervisor and or subject matter experts/professionals. Work may be evaluated while in progress and upon completion for technical adequacy or conformity with direction and instructions. 

Responsibilities

Successfully complete training with the objective of obtaining/acquiring a working knowledge of Federal, state, and local laws and regulations; and NETL Directives, Policies and Procedures Actively support and promote NETL's and the Company's ES&H programs while fostering the growth of a strong safety culture. Complying with applicable laws, regulatory requirements and NETL Directives Assist with keeping ES&H related equipment in good working order, properly stored and organized. Assist in the collection of designated ES&H measurements/samples using standard or approved equipment and procedures. Perform ES&H equipment preventative maintenance using oral and or written instructions. Perform troubleshooting/problem identification and resolution. Respond to various types of emergencies and provide assistance as appropriate based on skills, knowledge and ability. Preparing and maintaining up-to-date inventories of ESH related trackable items as directed. Perform spill clean-up activities involving hazardous materials, substances and wastes and the residue from spill clean-up activities. Assist with oversight of subcontractor activities for ES&H services as directed. Organizing, cleaning, and maintaining the interior and exterior of ES&H facilities, hazardous waste accumulations areas and chemical storage/dispensing facilities. Perform onsite activities and operations related to hazardous waste identification, collection, transfer, management, segregation, labeling, packaging, storage, and disposal once a waste is transferred from a waste producer to the Site Support Contractor (SSC) ESH organization. Assist with identification and proper containment and storage of wastes, as directed. If required, assist with receiving, handling, storing, segregating, and dispensing various chemicals as necessary to research or maintenance personnel. If required, assist with preparing and maintaining computerized inventories for chemical storage and hazardous wastes. Recognizing, evaluating and, if necessary and feasible, testing, neutralizing, and stabilizing outdated peroxide-forming chemicals in accordance with established protocols and procedures Participate in the development of hazards analyses, assessments, and activity hazard analyses (AHAs) if necessary, to ensure that work hazards and environmental concerns are identified and that waste is handled, managed, and processed safely in an environmentally sound manner. Other duties as assigned to insure timely project execution.

Qualifications

A High School diploma or GED is required. Minimum of eight (8) years of industrial or research related experience is required. Demonstrated experience in classifying, seg egating and lab packing of hazardous materials/waste. Preferred Qualifications At least ten (10) years of job-related experience or equivalent. Conditions of Employment United States Citizen Possess and maintain a valid United States driver's license. All regular, non-temporary positions assigned to this classification are represented by a labor union and subject to the terms and conditions of the IUOE Collective Bargaining Agreement. Able to work night, weekends, and holidays as needed.

Work Environment/Physical Demands

Work Environment Requires work in commercial government facilities (e.g., warehouse, offices, projects, labs, outside locations, etc. where mechanical equipment is being installed, tested, analyzed, monitored, or operated and / or maintained. Equipment may be loud and noisy and or have exposed moving components. Work environment involves some exposure to hazards or physical risks which requires following basic safety precautions. Physical and Mental Demands Such positions may involve routine lifting up to 50 pounds, regular handling, grasping, kneeling, working overhead, and carrying. Constant use of vision and mental alertness is required. Integrated Safety Management Observe and follow all corporate, federal, state and site environmental safety and health (ES&H) policies and procedures that pertain to the job classification being performed. Perform only those tasks in which you have the required training, competence, knowledge, skills, and abilities to prevent injury to oneself, other employees, the public, or the environment. Hazard and situational awareness for ES&H risks associated with the work. Perform work safely in accordance with hazard controls. Report all unsafe operations, and, if necessary, exercise stop-work authority in any situation posing imminent or danger. Must wear proper PPE as required and ensure PPE is in acceptable condition. Keep office space, operating area, control room, mechanical room, warehouse etc. clean and orderly. Attend all safety meetings and stay current with assigned required training. Maintain active involvement in the introduction, revision, and/or promotion of ES&H/ISM program activities. Hours of Work Typical shift is 8 hours per day, M-F daylight schedule, and must be able to occasionally work after hours on nights, holidays, and weekends. Schedule is determined by the company and business needs.
