Overview
Introduction
The Strategy & Service Division is responsible for providing value-added services to ElectriCities Members and establishing long-term strategic objectives for the company. These services include safety and training, residential services, commercial and industrial services, joint procurement, key accounts services, training, hosted technology solutions, and distribution services.
Within the Division, the Safety & Training Department provides a variety of safety-related services to our members, which include crew audits, safety meetings, accident investigations, linework safety schools, lineworker career development programs, mutual aid coordination, and OSHA expertise.
Responsibilities
Major Duties and Responsibilities
Assist, instruct, and coordinate ElectriCities Safety & Training Schools to provide ongoing training to our members and their electric operating utility employees.
Assist in the organization, development, promotion, implementation, and overview of the Career Development Programs to include:
Conducting testing for member employees that are in the Career Development Programs.
Working with the Career Development Program sub-committees and Community Colleges to keep the programs updated.
Assisting with the maintenance of accurate training records for each participant as outlined in the apprenticeship program.
Provide safety related services to members to include:
Performing crew audits of member utilities.
Conducting safety meetings for member utilities.
Participating in investigations of accidents that occur at member utilities, upon request.
Providing advice and support to member utilities in the areas of safety, safety procedures, OSHA compliance, and the APPA Safety Manual.
Serve as a primary contact and liaison for assigned members in the areas of safety, training, and mutual aid by:
Providing the highest level of customer service possible to members.
Providing timely and accurate information to assigned members.
Supporting, as requested by Manager, Safety & Training, the NCAMES organization.
Coordinate and assist member cities during Mutual Aid Events, as required, by:
Providing coordination and communication, as required, during Mutual Aid Events.
Serving as an embedded safety crew member for requesting member municipalities during storm response efforts.
Serve as a subject matter expert for the development of new safety and training programs, as member requirements dictate. This includes collaborating with the Learning and Development Department and fostering cross-functional teamwork.
Foster an environment of collaboration and teamwork in order to effectively work with other departments/divisions and fellow employees.
Perform other related duties as assigned.
Controls
The Senior Safety & Training Specialist works under the direct supervision of the Supervisor, Safety & Training, who reviews the employee’s work performance under ElectriCities’ guidelines in terms of overall effectiveness and provides professional guidance as needed. The Supervisor, Safety & Training approves all requests for vacation and other time off. This position is exempt from the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act.
Physical Requirements
The Senior Safety & Training Specialist must maintain the physical condition necessary to perform tasks in an office setting such as operating a personal computer, keyboards, and other peripheral equipment. The employee must also maintain the physical condition to conduct training classes (standing, walking, and sitting for extended periods) and be able to lift equipment required to conduct classes (anticipated at no more than 75 pounds). The Senior Safety & Training Specialist must be physically capable of operating a motor vehicle and traveling extensively throughout North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia by car daily. Periodic travel outside of North Carolina may also be required for training/development purposes.
Qualifications
A minimum of 6 years’ experience as a journeyman lineman, with journeyman card.
Willingness to travel extensively throughout North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia to provide guidance to member cities to attain and maintain a comprehensive and cost-effective Safety and Training Program.
Knowledge of applicable Occupational Safety and Health Association (OSHA) regulations.
Familiarity with municipal operations and electrical systems operations and maintenance practices, including overhead and underground distribution.
Strong verbal and written communication skills, as well as the ability to efficiently organize, coordinate, and instruct line schools.
Working knowledge of personal computer software applications and experience using Microsoft Word and Power Point.
Proven ability to accept responsibility, provide outstanding customer service and work independently with minimal supervision.
Ability to relate well with city employees and utility management both in the field and classroom.
