Classification Description Summary
The Airport Firefighter performs firefighting, lifesaving, and other related work activities connected with the response to emergency and other incidents, fire prevention, equipment operation and maintenance, facility maintenance, work and skill readiness; works as a team member of a fire or rescue response company.
The Airport Firefighter is the entry level position within the series. The incumbent is responsible for learning and applying rules, regulations, policies, and procedures related to the assigned functions of the job. Work is performed under close supervision until mastery of required skills is achieved. This is differentiated from the Airport Fire Equipment Operator who completes more technical and skilled tasks.
Essential Functions
Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include any of the following representative duties, knowledge, and skills. Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:
Respond to all aircraft emergencies, hazardous materials incidents, or structural alarms; operate assigned vehicles; connect hoses to hydrants; operate firefighting equipment, pumps, and related equipment.
Rescues persons endangered by fires or other hazards and administers first aid to injured parties when assigned.
Inspect buildings to determine compliance with relevant fire prevention rules, regulations, and procedures.
Inspect aircraft refueling vehicles and storage areas in accordance with the Uniform Fire Code and FAA directives.
Maintain records and prepare reports as necessary.
Assist in clearing disabled aircraft from active runway; disarm military aircraft ejection seats.
Perform salvage operations and place waterproof covers on materials subject to water damage.
Conducts inspections and other fire prevention tasks including fire safety education to eliminate or reduce fire hazards and enforce fire codes.
Develops and maintains high levels of work knowledge and skills for various duties through training, manipulative drills, and other skill maintenance programs.
Operates and maintains properly and safely firefighting and other related equipment and apparatus in an efficient and effective manner; keeps fire station and other facilities in a clean, orderly, and usable condition.
Assists in completing other day-to-day work such as record keeping and map maintenance.
Perform various public information and relations tasks, as appropriate and assigned through written and oral form.
Maintains an adequate level of physical fitness to perform firefighting, rescue, equipment operation, and other related tasks.
Performs relief work in the capacity of a Fire Equipment Operator, when qualified and assigned.
Performs other duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications
Knowledge of:
Principles, practices, and procedures used in a comprehensive airport fire and rescue program.
Procedures, methods, and techniques of emergency medical services including basic first aid and CPR.
Modern airport fire prevention, fire suppression, and rescue principles, practices, techniques and procedures, includes the operation and maintenance requirements of the various types of fire apparatus equipment, tools, and devices.
Operations, services, and activities of fire prevention.
Operational characteristics, services and activities of a comprehensive fire operation and emergency medical services programs.
Principles, practices and procedures of fire prevention, operation, and emergency medical services.
Mechanical, chemical, and related characteristics of a wide variety of flammable and explosive materials and objects.
Department policies, rules and regulations.
Ability to:
Analyze situations quickly and reach logical conclusions.
Follow procedures and directions both in written and oral form.
Write as reflected in filling out forms, reports, logs, and the drawing of diagrams.
Live and work as a member of the team.
Understand basic arithmetic elements using whole numbers, decimals, percentages, and fractions.
Understand mechanical aptitude.
Work under high levels of stress.
Learn firefighting techniques, equipment operations and maintenance, rescue and other relevant techniques.
Apply Emergency Medical Technician skills.
Meet physical and medical requirements established by the department.
Combinations of education and experience that are equivalent to the following minimum qualifications are acceptable.
Education:
Graduation from high school or equivalent.
Experience:
Four years full-time firefighting experience. Applicant must be currently employed within the fire service or separated from the fire service for no more than 12-months.
Licenses and Certifications:
Must possess a Firefighter II certification.
Must possess a Hazardous Materials (Haz-Mat) Operations Level certification.
Must possess a Valid Nevada Emergency Medical Technician certification or National Registry Emergency Medical Technician certification.
Must possess a valid class B driver's license with F endorsement.
Other:
Must be at least 18 years of age at the time of appointment.
Supplemental Information
Physical Demands and Working Environment:
Emergency and office environments; exposure to dangerous surroundings, natural and man-made disasters.
Performing work around moderate to high noise levels, vibrations, fire, chemicals, smoke, ash, debris, and other hazardous materials.
Must be in physical condition to perform fire suppression, emergency medical and prevention duties.
Must be able to operate emergency vehicles, apparatus and equipment.
Must have verbal communication and reading ability, visual acuity and hearing to perform field duties and ability to work for extended periods in an office or extremes of outdoor environments.
Must have ability to perform sustained and vigorous activities in a variety of environmental conditions and tolerate exposure to heat, fumes, smoke, pressurized water and chemicals. Positions are required to work varied shifts including nights, weekends and holidays.
