Summarized Purpose:

Manages the day-to-day operations of a service function within the department. Works with staff to meet service level agreements. Supports development, implementation and is directly responsible for maintenance of processes and procedures. Supports development of training materials. Ensures operational compliance to company SOPs.

Key responsibilities:

• Manages staff, which may include interviewing and selection, job description preparation, professional development, goal setting, performance management,behavioral and technical coaching and mentoring, employee counseling, andseparations. Approves courses of action on salary administration, hiring, corrective action, and terminations. Reviews and approves time records, expense reports, requests for leave, and overtime. Promotes all aspects of PPD Equal Employment Opportunity policy and Affirmative Action Plan.

• Ensures equipment is maintained as required per manufacturer; coordinates and reviews validation and maintenance procedures. Ensures sample chain of custody and business continuity objectives are met.

• Oversees the following core tasks for productivity and quality – sample registration, requisition form entry, sample routing, data verification, sample storage, sample shipments to clients and third party labs, sample aliquoting, sample de- identification, sample destruction, and other tasks as required based on business need.

• Provides basic support for IT processes.

• Provides technical interpretation of study protocol requirements in relationship to sample handling, storage and disposition.

Keys to Success

Education and Experience:

• Bachelor’s Degree in Scientific Field (Medical Technology, Biology, Chemistry, etc)

• Previous experience that provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the job (comparable to 3 to 5 years).

• 1+ year of leadership responsibility

In some cases an equivalency, consisting of a combination of appropriate education, training and/or directly related experience, will be considered sufficient for an individual to meet the requirements of the role.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

• Good working knowledge of scientific or clinical methods

• Good problem solving and critical thinking skills

• Good organizational skills and the ability to multi-task

• Strong verbal, written, presentation, and interpersonal skills

• Ability to write technical documents such as SOPs, working instructions, and guidelines

• Good computer skills including Microsoft Office tools and enterprise applications

• Leadership abilities

• Ability to work in a collaborative team environment

Working Environment

• Work is performed in an office and/or a laboratory and/or a clinical environment with exposure to electrical equipment.

• Occasionally travel to sites or client locations, occasionally travels within the United States.

• Exposure to biological fluids with potential exposure to infectious organisms. Rare exposure to skin and lung irritants, radiation, toxic materials and hazardous waste.

• Personal protective equipment required such as protective eyewear, garments and gloves.

• Frequently stationary for 6-8 hours per day.

• Light to moderate lifting and carrying (or otherwise moves) objects including luggage and laptop computer with a maximum lift of 15-20 lbs.

• Ability to access and use a variety of computer software developed both in-house and off-the-shelf.

• Ability to communicate moderately complex information and ideas so others will understand; with the ability to listen to and understand information and ideas presented through spoken words and sentences.

• Frequently interacts with others, relates sensitive information to diverse groups.

• Ability to apply basic principles to solve conceptual issues.

• Performs a wide range of variable tasks as dictated by variable demands and changing conditions with little predictability as to the occurrence. Ability to perform under stress. Ability to multi-task.
