SUMMARY: Head Lifeguards assist the Pool Manager and Assistant Pool Manager with the overall daily operation of City swimming, monitors activities at the City of Safford swimming pool, performs lifeguarding and. Under basic supervision, the Head Lifeguard monitors pool activities to enforce policies and procedures and ensure the safety of pool patrons. Assists in the supervision of lifeguards in addition to duties of lifeguard.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISITICS: This is a singular tiered position that reports directly to the Pool Manager or Assistant Pool Manager.

  • Supervises swimmers and maintains the safety of the public at the City pool by supervising activities and enforcing safety rules and regulations.
  • Performs rescue procedures and resuscitates swimmers as needed; administers proper first aid to address any injuries; performs in-service drills satisfactorily as outlined by pool managers.
  • Participates in all special swimming programs as assigned; maintains pool attendance records; collects pool entrance fees as required.
  • Spots hazards to prevent accidents.
  • Provides advice on water safety.
  • Provides water rescue.
  • Provides first aid including CPR.
  • Opens and closes the pool as directed by the pool managers.
  • Monitors pool related activities closely throughout the scheduled shift and identifies any safety issues.
  • Directs swimmers out of the pool in hazardous conditions.
  • Organizes and oversees pool parties.
  • Maintains a clean environment in and around the pool.
  • Provides aid to patrons.
  • Assists in supervising lifeguards and pool patrons.
  • Makes required reports.
  • assists with lifeguard duties and in assigning guards to positions.
  • Checks condition of pool and takes pool water tests.
  • Accepts responsibility for onsite supervision of all aspects of the facility when the pool managers in not present.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education, Experience, Certifications and Licenses:

  • One (1) season prior lifeguard experience required, two (2) seasons preferred.
  • Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED Certification with the American Red Cross.
  • Must be at least 16 years of age.

Required Knowledge and Skills:

  • Knowledge of the operation of a swimming pool, including sanitation, maintenance, safety and public relations.
  • Knowledge of principles, practices and application of lifesaving and first aid techniques.
  • Knowledge of local emergency services available.
  • Knowledge of rules and regulations pertaining to the pool use and enforcing them.
  • Skill in interacting with people of different social, economic, and ethnic backgrounds.
  • Skill in following and effectively communicating verbal and written instructions.
  • Skill in acting quickly and calmly in emergencies.

  • Work is routinely performed in and around pool with exposure to inclement weather and varying temperatures.
  • Subject to moderate noise levels, standing (sometimes for extended periods of time); walking, bending, reaching, kneeling, climbing and occasional lifting of objects up to 50 pounds.
  • Subject to lifting and/or moving victims, equipment and supplies weighing up to 150 pounds.
