Position Description

TheSchool of Music (https://www.music.txst.edu/) at Texas State University seeks an engaging, creative, collaborative, and dedicated teacher to serve as a full-time, non-tenure-line Assistant Professor of Instruction of Music Theory. Duties to begin in August 2025.

The successful candidate will be expected to:

  • Teach music theory and/or aural skills courses as part of the undergraduate musicianship core, and other topics according to the candidate’s qualifications and needs of the School of Music.

  • Tutor music theory/aural skills students.

  • Participate in faculty meetings, committees, and service activities.

  • Other duties assigned by the Director of the School of Music.

Required Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in music theory or related field.

  • Demonstrated success in teaching music theory and aural skills at the professional or collegiate level.

  • A minimum of one academic year as instructor-of-record for music theory and/or aural skills courses.

  • Experience working with individuals from varied backgrounds

Preferred Qualifications

  • Doctorate in music theory or related field.

  • Keyboard skills.

  • National stature as a music theorist.

  • Demonstrated communication and organizational skills, and an ability to work collaboratively.
