GE Vernova Safety by Design Leader in Stafford, United Kingdom

Job Description Summary

Become part of a winning team and help to deliver the Green Energy transition.

In the role of ‘Safety by Design Leader’, you will support the Engineering teams at both the tendering and execution stages, by ensuring all design work prioritises safety, and considers how operatives will construct, operate, maintain and deconstruct the works, and as such significantly reduce the level of safety, health, and environmental concerns during the design phase.

Job Description

The North and South Europe Grid Systems Integration (GSI) team delivers a wide range of high voltage AC and DC transmission projects, and is looking for a “Safety by Design Leader” to join the engineering team.

These large and complex projects span the equally difficult domains of Construction and High Voltage Power transmission, and in doing so create a wide range of risks. These risks can take many forms and it is the job of the design teams to remove or mitigate these hazards and ensure that they never materialise and demonstrate their potential to change lives.

Role Summary:

  • In the role of ‘Safety by Design Leader’, you will support the Engineering teams with this objective, at both the tendering and execution stages, and ensure all design work prioritises safety and considers how operatives will construct, operate, maintain and deconstruct the works, and as such significantly reduce the level of safety, health, and environmental concerns, even before the first ground is broken. This will be achieved by undertaking the following key actions.

  • Through training and education, ensure that all members of the design team consider not only the technical requirements of their work, but also the safety implications, and ask themselves; how will the work be done? can it be done safely? and would I be comfortable doing it?

  • Working closely with the appointed discipline verification engineers, ensure that all peer checking and design reviews, correctly consider safety by design, at all stages of the design cycle, and at all stages of the project build and operation.

  • Lead and manage the ‘Hazard in Design’ process across the portfolio of projects being delivered, by facilitating and chairing the ‘Hazid’ reviews, ensuring that hazards are identified and mitigated, and the required actions are correctly followed up.

  • From a Safety by Design perspective, lead the capturing and capitalisation of the learning experienced from the projects being executed, including both the communication of the issue, and the undertaking of design and process changes to avoid reoccurrence.

  • Lead all necessary actions to ensure that the design work undertaken by the Engineering teams complies with both the legal requirements, such as the Electricity at Work and CDM Regulations, and any additional contract requirements requested by the Customer.

Required Qualifications & Experience:

  • Electrical/mechanical/civil/site or chemical background

  • Strong interest in safety and how things are put together safely

  • Ability to interface with designers and challenge on design

  • Proactive & Dynamic

Desirable:

  • HAZOP, HAZID or NEBOSH qualification

  • Experience with infrastructure design
