Laboratory Aide - Core - Evening - Full Time Evening Shift (M-F 3:00 PM -11:30 PM)

Position Summary

At Stony Brook Medicine the Laboratory Aides assist technicians and pathologists in a hospital clinical laboratory, a medical research laboratory or in a morgue by performing a variety of semi-skilled routine tasks and/or clerical duties under direction to assist medical staff in making or confirming diagnosis to assist research staff in their work.

Duties of a Laboratory Aide may include the following but are not limited to:

  • Accurately accessions and labels patient specimens utilizing the computer system and/or manual procedures.

  • Records data into appropriate accession logbooks when computers are not available.

  • Reviews all patient specimens received for proper labeling to ensure proper patient identification and check for appropriate sample type and size for the ordered test procedure.

  • Prepares and processes patient specimens for analysis to include centrifugation and aliquoting (manually or automatically) and properly distributing the samples to proper lab stations.

  • Make calls to give lab results or answers telephones to provide information on availability of patient results, specimen collection information and addition of tests to existing orders.

  • Maintains records of laboratory reports as assigned and perform other clerical related duties.Learn the computer to obtain pertinent data and to report test results and generate orders, etc.

  • Will be required to provide backup support in laboratory stat service and serve as a runner in transporting specimens between MART building and main hospital and between different departments within the department of laboratory.

  • Adheres to all policies and protocols to ensure quality patient care and maintenance of safety rules and HIPAA, NYSDO, Join Commission regulations.

  • Will perform filing, inventory control, stock shelves, dust lab analyzers/lab counters and other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Required : No minimum education or experience requirements.

Preferred : High School Diploma, BS/BA/AA or some college credits. Medical Terminology and prior hospital/lab experience preferred.

  • Successfully complete pre-employment physical examination and obtain medical clearance from Stony Brook Medicine's Employee Health Services

    • Complete electronic reference check with a minimum of three (3) professional references.
  • Successfully complete a 4 panel drug screen

    • Meet Regulatory Requirements for pre employment screenings.
  • Provide a copy of any required New York State license(s)/certificate(s).

Failure to comply with any of the above requirements could result in a delayed start date and/or revocation of the employment offer.

Anticipated Pay Range:

The salary range (or hiring range) for this position is $35,177 / year.

The above salary range represents SBUH’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting. The specific salary offer will be based on the candidate’s validated years of comparable experience. Any efforts to inflate or misrepresent experience are grounds for disqualification from the application process or termination of employment if hired.

Some positions offer annual supplemental pay such as:

  • Location pay for UUP, CSEA & PEF full-time positions ($3400)

  • Inconvenience pay/supplemental shift differential. ($575)
