Required Qualifications (as evidenced by an attached resume):
Bachelor’s degree (foreign equivalent or higher). Three (3) years of full time higher education experience (student experience may be considered). Experience in advising/supervising student staff or volunteers. Experience with utilizing data to meaningfully improve an outcome. Experience working with a diverse population.
Preferred Qualifications:
Master’s degree (foreign equivalent or higher) in Communications, Counseling, Higher Education, Public Health, Social Work, or a related field. Additional years (4 ) of full time higher education experience (student experience may be considered). Experience developing and implementing student retention and success strategies for a diverse student population. Experience using data from assessment or evaluation activities such as surveys, program evaluation, quality assessment/improvement, or similar to improve student engagement.
Brief Description of Duties:
Reporting to the Assistant Vice President and Dean of Students, the Student Life Engagement and Transitions Strategist works in the Office of Student Life. They are responsible for developing, implementing, and evaluating outreach strategies that support and increase undergraduate student success, retention, and persistence, mainly related to the co-curricular experience. The Student Life Engagement and Transitions Strategist works collaboratively with divisional and campus partners to proactively identify, intervene, and connect with disengaged students, build their affinity for Stony Brook, and develop individualized approaches that support their satisfaction and retention. The Student Life Engagement and Transitions Strategist utilizes engagement data to identify at-risk students and provides 1:1 and small group outreach via coaching and effective communication to improve the student’s experience. The Student Life Engagement and Transitions Strategist is engaged in significant student tracking of engagement/involvement and collaborates with campus partners.
Transition Programs, Student Coaching, and Outreach:
Provide weekly individual and small group coaching to new and continuing undergraduate students whose data indicate low engagement with the University community and services.
Develop an engagement plan for each student through building a trusting relationship and sharing knowledge about campus resources and opportunities.
Support each student’s identity development and connection by establishing individualized engagement goals, developing a plan to achieve defined goals, and following up to provide ongoing support and track progress.
Organize and conduct workshops, focus groups, and other strategies to strengthen students’ affinity with and sense of belonging at Stony Brook, provide tools for co-curricular engagement, and help address barriers or obstacles to their involvement and success at Stony Brook.
Data Gathering/Evaluation and Strategy Development:
In collaboration with the CRAFT (Communications, Research, Assessment, Fundraising, & Technology) team, execute a strategy to identify, intervene, and connect with undergraduate students who are less engaged at Stony Brook. This includes working with the Assistant Vice President and Dean of Students, and the CRAFT team to develop and implement an annual plan focused on students' out-of-classroom engagement.
Gather actionable data from short pulse surveys, campus event attendance, club and organization involvement, predictive analytics, and other sources.
In partnership with the CRAFT team, integrate outreach strategies to connect with, track, support, and retain each student whose overall profile indicates a low engagement score.
In collaboration with CRAFT and campus partners, evaluate outcomes of various engagement tactics to support senior decision-making on the scaling and selecting approaches.
Student Supervision:
Recruit, train, and evaluate interns and/or work-study student employees in support of the overall program initiative.
Coordinate student employees in the development, planning, and execution of weekly events and tasks.
Utilize student employees to assist and support programs such as Welcome Week, Family Weekend, Visit Days, Involvement Fairs, etc.
Design group and individual projects for student employees, creating appropriate work schedules, and establishing clear benchmarks to assess the successful completion of assignments.
Carefully evaluate students’ progress continuously, ensuring compliance and successful completion with the Career Center’s experiential learning requirements.
Collaborate and Communicate with Divisional and Campus Partners:
Collaborating with Student Affairs and campus partners to assist in undergraduate student outreach. This includes working with the New Student and Transition Programs, Student Support Team, Campus Residences, Commuter & Off-Campus Living, U-RISE (Undergraduate Retention Initiatives and Success Engagement), Undergraduate Education, and other campus areas who are connected to students and help support 1:1 outreach and engagement efforts.
Develop communication, scripts, protocols, and processes for managing student outreach lists and successfully tracking outcomes.
Make referrals to academic advisors and the U-RISE team on academic and degree progress matters.
Follow up with campus partners regularly to share information, provide progress updates, and highlight success stories to generate additional high-impact practices and intervention strategies.
Professional Development and Committee Involvement:
Participate in opportunities that promote your learning, growth, and development (i.e. classes, training, committee, webinar, etc.).
Contribute to the Division of Student Affairs and Stony Brook University by attending and/or supporting events, activities, and programs sponsored by areas outside of your unit/department (i.e. campus-wide traditions, events, programs, etc.).
Other duties or projects as assigned as appropriate to rank and departmental mission.
Hours outside of the typical work schedule may be required at times.
Special Notes:
This is a full-time appointment. FLSA Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Minimum salary threshold must be met to maintain FLSA exemption.
In addition to the employee's base salary, this position is eligible for $3,400 UUP annual location pay, paid biweekly.
Essential Position: This has been designated as an essential position based on the duties of the job and the functions performed. Positions that are designated as such may be required to report to work/remain at work even if classes are canceled, and the campus is working on limited operations in an emergency.
