Stony Brook University Trades Specialist (Locksmith) in Stony Brook, New York
Required Qualifications: As per Civil Service standard and specifications. Four years of full-time experience in locksmithing under a skilled tradesperson which would provide training equivalent to that given in a training, apprenticeship, or equivalent program; or an equivalent combination of experience and training gained by completion of technical courses in locksmithing at a school, institute, or branch of the Armed Services. Candidates must be able to perform the physical tasks of the position such as bending, lifting, stretching and climbing. Must have the ability to work in confined spaces and from a ladder, scaffolding or man lift over ten feet in height. Must have, keep and maintain the appropriate valid NYS Driver's License; have a motor vehicle record which is free from major violations or a pattern of repeat violations. Brief Description of Duties: The Trades Specialist (Locksmith) will conduct inspections, determine maintenance needs, installing, repairing doors and locks. The Incumbent will perform the physical tasks required of a trade's person, such as bending, lifting, stretching, climbing ladders and scaffolding, and being able to work in small areas. May be asked to respond to emergencies. The Incumbent must also have a working knowledge of math used for the craft trades. The incumbent will operate the assigned vehicle in a safe manner obeying all campus motor vehicle rules and parking policies. Report accidents, safety problems or service needs. The incumbent will be eligible and expected to share on-call/recall schedule staffing for lock-related emergencies.
- Repairs locks, disassembles locks and replaces worn tumblers, springs and other parts.
- Re-key for security purposes, changes locker combinations.
- Use tools, machines, equipment and materials of the locksmith trade for both mechanical and electric locks.
- Resolve most job related problems that may arise. Understand and Carry out written and verbal instructions.
- Handles requests for new keys including cutting keys, maintenance of records of keys given out and delivery of keys to customers when necessary
- Will maintain and install magnetic locks, electric strikes, CCTV, being able to repair and install them in addition to the lock shop responsibilities when necessary.
- Fabricate various control panels, locking hardware and associated wiring. Make necessary adjustments and inspect completed work.
- Other duties or projects as assigned as appropriate to rank and departmental mission.
Special Notes: This is a full-time position, 40 hours per week, Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. FLSA Nonexempt position, eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Internal and external search to occur simultaneously. Mandatory rehire roster candidates have preference. SG 12 Hiring Rate $48,956, Job Rate $59,757. This position includes location pay of $3,400 per year.
