Japan Seller Services is seeking a Business Intelligence Engineer to join the BI team. The core focus of this role is to leverage data and BI capabilities to directly support the goals and initiatives of the Japan Seller Services business team. Stakeholders include product/program managers, sales managers and leadership team. The ideal candidate will be excited about:

• Pulling complex data from large scale databases using SQL

• Identifying and developing relevant program metrics

• Automating metrics tracking on Quicksight or Excel

• Diving deep into data to fix business issues and uncover growth opportunities

• Estimating business impact for new programs using proxy data

• Running statistical models

• The ideal candidate will possess good business acumen and enjoy influencing business decisions while improving operational efficiency to drive higher productivity.

Key Responsibilities:

• Manage request intake independently and set the right priorities based on organizational needs

• Manage multiple tasks simultaneously and deliver in the most efficient and effective way

• Interact and communicate effectively with stakeholders, including senior leadership from multiple project areas

• Translate complex or ambiguous business problems into analysis requirements

• Proactively identify problems with significant business impact and help business partners create actionable priorities

• Derive business insights from analysis and make recommendations to the business

• Extract complex data from large-scale Redshift database using efficient queries

• Develop metrics tracking and automate scheduled report refresh (daily, weekly, monthly and quarterly)

• Innovate solutions that are robust, extensible and scalable

• Ensure accuracy and reliability of data while aligning with globally standardized definitions

• Demonstrate technical expertise (SQL, Python, Statistics, AWS technologies) to efficiently deliver BI solutions

• Effectively communicate with Business Intelligence teams in US/India on technical blockers and requirements

• Make technical trade-offs for long-term/short-term needs

• Read business documents to understand business priorities

• Write documentation outlining analysis details, insights, and recommendations

Key job responsibilities

The Business Intelligence Engineer will own 2+ business domains and work closely with business partners (Product/Program/Sales Managers) and technical partners (BIEs, Data Engineers, Data Scientists) across the following four pillars:

[Data Visualization]

Build and maintain metrics tables in Quicksight/Excel for weekly, monthly, and quarterly business reviews with the leadership team. Develop and maintain detailed metrics dashboards for product/program managers and account managers. This role requires alignment with business stakeholders in Japan and technical stakeholders in US/India.

[Analytics]

Deliver insights and recommendations to support business decision-making. This includes opportunity/risk/impact analysis of new programs/product features and investigation of data quality and customer-facing issues. The role may require using statistical models and delivering 1-4 page documents or contributing to business documentation.

[Ad-hoc Data Pull]

Write SQL queries and extract complex data for short/long-term planning and quick decision-making. This requires good judgment in determining what should be supported by the BIE vs. self-managed by the data requester.

[Operational Efficiency]

Improve productivity of the BI team by collaborating with Business Intelligence Engineers and Data Engineers in US/India teams to:

• Drive global initiatives (metrics standardization, dashboard development, infrastructure optimization, development of LLM solutions)

• Innovate local mechanisms (contact reduction, request intake process optimization)

A day in the life

The individual will work with 5-10 business partners in Japan and 3-5 technical partners in US/India. They will continuously manage requests for data visualization, analytics, and ad-hoc data pulls from business partners through our internal ticketing system (SIM). This involves prioritizing requests while ensuring sufficient time is allocated for important work and meeting agreed-upon timelines.

Our Redshift database is managed by the central BI team in the US. The individual will work closely with technical partners in US/India on database-level issue resolution and optimization. Additionally, since the central BI team in the US owns global technical initiatives, they will collaborate on topics such as metric definition and data source standardization.

Approximately 10% of the role's time will be dedicated to routine work.

Basic Qualifications

• 3+ years of analyzing and interpreting data with Redshift, Oracle, NoSQL etc. experience

• Experience with data visualization using Tableau, Quicksight, or similar tools

• Experience with data modeling, warehousing and building ETL pipelines

• Experience in Statistical Analysis packages such as R, SAS and Matlab

• Experience using SQL to pull data from a database or data warehouse and scripting experience (Python) to process data for modeling

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with AWS solutions such as EC2, DynamoDB, S3, and Redshift

• Experience in data mining, ETL, etc. and using databases in a business environment with large-scale, complex datasets
