JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

The Pennsylvania IPM (Integrated Pest Management) Program, based in the Dept. of Entomology at Penn State, seeks a bilingual (English/Spanish) Outreach Specialist to work in urban communities in Philadelphia and beyond to implement IPM programs and maintain and develop relationships with PA IPM partners. The successful applicant will work as part of a team to support and sustain IPM using face-to-face and online activities to teach the public how to control pests (bed bugs, cockroaches, mice, rats, etc.) in structures in urban communities, including single family homes, row houses, schools, commercial buildings, and other settings. The successful applicant will conduct public outreach including attending community and task force meetings, and events such as health and community events. Latinx residents make up over 15% of Philadelphians, and even higher proportions in some collar-counties (e.g., Latinx make up over 23% of Berks residents). This is an important and growing constituency for IPM outreach and adoption, and will be a major focus for this position. Spanish speaking, reading, and writing fluency is required. Additionally, one must be a trusted worker who is respected by the people they serve and able to apply their own unique understanding of the experience, socio-economic needs, language, and/or culture of the communities served.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

No direct reports; may help direct and support interns.

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Working as part of a team to support and sustain community-led action around issues related to urban pests

  • Working as part of a team to organize and hold events that draw in and involve local residents and partners

  • Recruiting and supporting local people to become volunteers and active leaders in their community, and that they remain engaged and involved

  • Working as part of a team to design and deliver a range of innovative community outreach and engagement activities throughout Philadelphia and adjacent areas

  • Developing and sustaining positive relationships with a range of people, including residents, community leaders, local groups and organizations, and local authorities

  • Supporting face-to-face, and online activities

  • Supporting the delivery and analysis of community-based qualitative action research

  • Attending meetings and working as part of the partnerships PA IPM has developed; some of these may require travel throughout Pennsylvania or other locations in the northeast US

  • Working in different environments (both office-based and on the ground) that are best suited to the community, including some evenings and weekends

  • Maintain case notes and files and ensure that all reporting requirements are adhered to as outlined by the funder and program for every client interaction

  • Work collaboratively with community partners and other Penn State Extension staff

  • Performs other duties/special projects as assigned

Required Skills/Abilities:

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

  • Fluency in speaking, reading, and writing Spanish is required

  • Excellent interpersonal and community engagement skills

  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail

  • Excellent time management skills with a proven ability to meet deadlines

This job requires that you operate a motor vehicle as a part of your job duties. A valid US driver’s license and successful completion of a motor vehicle records check will be required in addition to standard background checks.
