Job Summary

The Locksmith performs work related to the repair, replacement, maintenance, and re-keying of complex lock systems and related hardware; repair, replacement of floor and overhead door closures; changing and repair of safe combinations; duplication and stamping of all University keys, maintaining key records and inventory, and maintaining security.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Repairs, replaces, and/or changes all locking devices and related hardware.
  • Repairs, rebuilds, and/or replaces all door closures and closing devices and related hardware.
  • Drive and operate service vehicles used for carpentry maintenance, installations, or repairs.
  • Cleans up jobsite upon completion of projects.
  • Responsible for proper use and care of locksmith equipment and tools.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned.

Additional Physical Demands

1. Employee may be subjected to smoke, dust, fumes, noise and discomfort of hot and cold conditions when required to work on exterior locks and closures, in steam tunnels, and walk in freezers.

2. Receives daily oral instructions from Foreperson, as well as Superintendent of Building Maintenance. Work is reviewed by Foreperson after each project is completed and occasionally during progress of project.

3. Works from blueprints or floor plans on larger projects. Consults with Foreperson, or Superintendent of Building Maintenance for instructions on smaller projects. Uses own initiative and expertise as to the most practical way to execute a particular installation or repair.

4. The employee is expected to support the Mission, Vision, Values, Guiding Principles and management operational directions and philosophies of Facilities & Services.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Current licensure as a Locksmith by the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation (IDFPR).
  • Four (4) years (48 months) of work experience in the repair and maintenance of locks, door checks, and related hardware and in the making and duplication of keys, including apprenticeship and/or vocational training.
  • Possession of valid State of Illinois driver\'s license at time of hire and maintained throughout employment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Associated Locksmiths of America, \"Certified Registered Locksmith (CRL)\" certification.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Journeyman level knowledge of locksmithing.
  • Knowledge of hand and machine tools.
  • Sufficient mathematical ability to calculate pin depths for master keying.
  • Ability to use acetylene welder for lock and closer repairs.
  • Ability to diagnose problems with locks, safes, door closures, and mechanical and electronic related door hardware.
  • Good communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with and understand customer needs and requirements.
  • Ability to read and understand blueprints, schematics, etc.
  • Thorough knowledge of OSHA safety regulations and safe and proper use of tools and equipment.

Appointment Information

This is a 100% full-time Civil Service 2278 - Locksmith position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after the search close date. Salary is established based on a collective bargaining agreement and is currently \$39.42/hour. Sponsorship for work authorization is not available for this position.
